Sri Rama Navmi - 27 Mar 2026
Sri Rama Navami marks the auspicious appearance day of Lord Sri Ramachandra, the Supreme Personality of Godhead who appeared to establish the principles of dharma, righteousness, and ideal conduct.
Lord Rama appeared in the month of Chaitra (March–April) on the ninth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha, Navami Tithi). This sacred day is celebrated every year by devotees across the world with great devotion and joy.
Lord Sri Ramachandra appeared as the son of King Dasharatha, the ruler of Ayodhya and a descendant of the great Ikshvaku dynasty (Raghu Vamsha). King Dasharatha had three queens—Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra—but had no children for many years. On the advice of Maharishi Vashishtha, the king performed the sacred Putra Kameshti Yajna.
By the blessings of the yajna:
Queen Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Rama
Queen Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharata
Queen Sumitra gave birth to the twin sons Lakshmana and Shatrughna
The divine pastimes of Lord Rama are beautifully described by Sage Valmiki in the epic Ramayana, and a summary of these pastimes is also found in the Ninth Canto of Srimad-Bhagavatam, narrated by Shukadeva Goswami to Maharaja Parikshit.
