Shastra Chakshu— Seeing Through the Eyes Of Scriptures (Inspired by the lecture of HG Yugal Prem Prabhu ji ) In Krishna consciousness, decisions should never be based solely on emotions, personal opinions, social pressure, or family relationships. A devotee learns to see every situation through Shastra -Chakshu, which means seeing through the eyes of Guru, Sadhu, and Shastra.
S.B. 4.4.22 presents Mother Sati as an ideal example of this principle. Although Dakṣa was her father, she did not support him when he offended Lord Śiva, the greatest Vaiṣṇava. Instead of allowing family affection to influence her judgment, she stood firmly on the principles of scripture. This teaches us that spiritual truth is higher than bodily relationships.
Draupadi demonstrated the same mood after Aśvatthāmā committed the terrible crime of killing her sons. Although she was overwhelmed with grief, she did not demand his immediate execution. She remembered that he was the son of her spiritual master, Dronacharya , and a Brahman . Rather than acting out of emotion, she considered the instructions of scripture and encouraged a decision based on dharma.
Similarly, if a dear devotee commits a Vaishnav offense, genuine compassion does not mean supporting or hiding the mistake. Real mercy means helping that devotee by bringing the matter to the appropriate authorities so that correction and spiritual progress can take place. Ignoring an offense may allow unwanted habits anarthas to grow even further.
A judge also serves as an example of this principle. A true judge does not make decisions based on personal attachment but according to the law. Likewise, a devotee should evaluate every person and situation according to Guru, Sadhu, and Shastra—not according to personal likes and dislikes.
Prabhupad explains that real spiritual closeness to the spiritual master does not come merely from living near him or serving him for many years. It comes from sincerely following his instructions. He also encouraged devotees to become like a blank blackboard—free from pride and preconceived ideas, always ready to receive and apply spiritual knowledge.
The essential lesson of this discussion is that a devotee must never tolerate offenses to a great Vaiṣṇava and should make every decision according to Guru, Sadhu, and Shastra. Seeing through the eyes of scripture protects one’s devotional life and helps one progress steadily toward pure devotion.
