Is Bhakti Meant to Give Us Happiness or Sorrow?

A thought-provoking question was asked in our Bhakti Shastri class: “Does bhakti give us happiness or sorrow?”

Most of us answered that bhakti neither gives happiness nor sorrow. Happiness and distress come according to our karma and the situations of this material world. Bhakti gives us the strength to remain steady in both. When happiness comes, bhakti prevents us from becoming proud, and when difficulties arise, bhakti gives us the faith and inner strength to tolerate them while remaining connected to Krishna.

Although this understanding is true, our teacher explained an even deeper realization.

Bhakti is not performed to obtain happiness or to avoid suffering. The real purpose of bhakti is to please the Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna. Bhakti is loving devotional service. A devotee’s focus is not on “What will I receive?” but on “How can I serve Krishna and bring Him pleasure?”

When our goal becomes Krishna’s satisfaction rather than our own comfort, our perspective changes completely. Whether life brings honor or dishonor, comfort or difficulty, success or failure, a sincere devotee continues serving with faith and gratitude. External circumstances may change, but the purpose of bhakti remains the same.

This is the beauty of devotional service. Bhakti is not a transaction to gain happiness; it is an expression of pure love. And when Krishna is pleased, the devotee naturally experiences the deepest peace and fulfillment—not because that was the goal, but because it is the natural result of loving service.

Therefore, the true definition of bhakti is not that it gives us happiness or helps us tolerate sorrow. Its real purpose is to lovingly serve and please Krishna. That is the essence of devotional life.
