( Inspired from the wonderful lecture of HG Ram Kumar prabhu ji ) When we speak about Lord Balarama, it is not enough to simply say that He is Lord Krishna’s elder brother. Balarama is the first expansion of Sri Krishna, and He is the embodiment of Krishna’s service.
One of His most beautiful names is Haladhara — the One who carries the plough. This gives us a wonderful spiritual connection: when life becomes complicated and we do not know how to move forward, Balarama has the “hal” — the solution, the strength and the guidance to prepare our heart for Krishna consciousness.
Balarama and the Five Rasas
In Krishna consciousness, our relationship with Krishna can develop through five primary rasas:
Shanta — peaceful appreciation Dasya — servant-master relationship Sakhya — friendship Vatsalya — parental affection Madhurya — conjugal love
Balarama is intimately connected with all these manifestations of Krishna’s loving relationships, while His own direct relationship with Krishna is especially expressed through fraternal affection, friendship and service.
1. Shanta Rasa — Recognising Krishna’s Supreme Position
Shanta-rasa is characterised by reverence, peace and appreciation of the Supreme Lord.
Balarama constantly reveals Krishna’s greatness and divine position. By understanding Balarama, we begin to understand that Krishna is not an ordinary person. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and our natural position is to approach Him with reverence and devotion.
2. Dasya Rasa — The Essence of Balarama
Perhaps the most important lesson Balarama gives us is service.
Balarama expands Himself in unlimited forms to serve Krishna. Krishna’s abode, His paraphernalia, His resting place and many arrangements for His pastimes are manifestations of Balarama’s service energy.
Therefore, Balarama teaches us:
“My purpose is to serve Krishna.”
This is also the essence of our spiritual life.
Our real identity is not our designation, achievements or material position. Our real identity is:
“I am Krishna’s servant.”
3. Sakhya Rasa — Krishna’s Beloved Brother and Friend
In Vrindavan, Balarama is Krishna’s elder brother and one of His closest companions.
They play together, go into the forests together, tend the cows together and share wonderful childhood pastimes with Their friends.
This shows us that our relationship with Krishna is not merely theoretical. Krishna is a person, and our relationship with Him is personal.
Balarama also protects Krishna whenever necessary. His presence gives Krishna’s devotees a deep feeling of strength, shelter and protection.
4. Vatsalya Rasa — The Affection of an Elder Brother
Balarama is Krishna’s elder brother, and therefore His relationship with Krishna carries deep affection and protective care.
He plays with Krishna like a friend, but at the same time, as the elder brother, He naturally looks after Him.
This teaches us something very beautiful:
Real love is expressed through service, care and protection.
Balarama’s relationship with Krishna reminds us that loving someone means wanting to serve and protect them—not simply wanting something from them.
5. Madhurya Rasa — Balarama’s Connection with Krishna’s Loving Pastimes
Here we need to understand an important theological point.
Balarama’s personal relationship with Krishna is not a conjugal relationship, because Balarama is Krishna’s elder brother. However, Balarama-tattva expands into various forms that participate in and facilitate Krishna’s transcendental pastimes.
Thus, Balarama is intimately connected with Krishna’s madhurya pastimes through His expansions and service arrangements.
The essential principle is:
Balarama is non-different from Krishna in spiritual essence, yet He has His own distinct identity and relationship with Krishna.
