Why krishna is called purushottam ( supreme lord)

📅 31 May 2026✍️ Ruchika Goel

Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita is called Purushottama Yoga – The Yoga of the Supreme Person ( krishna ) .

Sri Krishna compares this material world to an upside-down banyan tree.

The roots are above (in the spiritual world) and the branches spread downward (the material world). Living entities become entangled in this tree through attachment, desires, and karma.

The solution is to cut this tree with the weapon of detachment (vairagya) and seek the shelter of the Supreme Lord. We are not body we are souls Materialistic people cannot understand this truth, but spiritually awakened people can .

Krishna is the light of the sun and moon.He nourishes all plants. He digests food as the fire within the stomach. He resides in everyone’s heart.

And therefore Krishna is Purushottam ( Supreme Lord ) . There are conditioned souls and liberated souls.Krishna is above both. Therefore He is called Purushottama, the Supreme Person. One who understands this becomes truly wise and engages in devotional service
