Honesty and Humility: Ornaments of a Devotee
While reading Sri Chaitanya Charitamrita, Madhya-lila Chapter 10, I was deeply inspired by how honesty and humility are essential ornaments of a devotee.
A beautiful example is Kala Krishna Das. Despite receiving the rare fortune of accompanying Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu during His South Indian tour, he became influenced by bad association and deviated from the proper path. However, after being rescued by Mahaprabhu, he did not try to justify himself, defend his actions, or hide his mistake. He honestly accepted his fallen condition and remained dependent on the Lord’s mercy.
Although Mahaprabhu rejected him externally, the devotees compassionately requested that he be engaged again in service, and Mahaprabhu accepted their request. Kala Krishna Das’s honesty and humility became the foundation of his spiritual recovery. Instead of covering his mistake, he accepted responsibility and sought shelter. This teaches us that spiritual advancement begins when we honestly acknowledge our shortcomings and humbly accept the guidance of Guru and Vaishnavas.
Another inspiring example is King Prataparudra. Although he was a powerful emperor, he never tried to use his position to gain an audience with Mahaprabhu. When Mahaprabhu declined to meet him, the King did not become offended or demand special treatment. Rather, he humbly approached Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya and other devotees, begging for their mercy and assistance. His eagerness was not based on prestige but on a sincere desire to receive the Lord’s mercy.
Similarly, the devotees demonstrated honesty by faithfully conveying Mahaprabhu’s instructions to the King without alteration. They did not compromise the Lord’s words to please a powerful person. Their loyalty to Mahaprabhu’s desire teaches us the importance of honesty in devotional service.
Honesty and humility go hand in hand. Honesty helps us recognize our actual position, while humility allows us to accept it and seek improvement. Without honesty, humility becomes superficial. Without humility, honesty becomes difficult because the false ego resists accepting reality.
Therefore, as aspiring devotees, we should strive to cultivate these qualities in our dealings with Guru, Vaishnavas, and Krishna. By honestly accepting our weaknesses, avoiding excuses, and remaining humble and dependent on mercy, we can make steady progress in devotional life.
“Trinad api sunicena taror iva sahishnuna” — one should be humbler than a blade of grass and more tolerant than a tree.
May Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu bless us with the honesty to see ourselves truthfully and the humility to always remain servants of His servants.
