From Asuri to Daivi
The journey from Asuri to Daivi is not a journey from one person to another; it is a journey from one state of consciousness to another. Every heart has the potential for both. The question is: Which nature do we nourish?
The incident between Parikshit Maharaj and Shringi beautifully illustrates this truth.
Maharaja Parikshit , although an exalted devotee, momentarily came under the influence of Asuri tendencies. Exhausted by hunger and thirst, he allowed frustration to overcome his judgment and placed a dead snake around the neck of the sage. This was not his true identity, but a temporary victory of anger over wisdom. It reminds us that even a sincere devotee must remain vigilant, because neglecting one’s consciousness can allow lower qualities to surface.
Yet what truly defines Parikshit Maharaj is what happened next. The moment he realized his mistake, he did not defend himself, blame circumstances, or seek revenge after being cursed. Instead, he accepted responsibility, saw the curse as the Lord’s mercy, renounced his kingdom, and absorbed himself in hearing about Krishna. His brief moment of Asuri influence became the doorway to an even greater expression of Daivi qualities—humility, repentance, surrender, and complete dependence on the Lord. His response transformed his mistake into spiritual perfection and bring closer to God
Shringi story reveals the opposite movement. Gifted with spiritual knowledge and born in a saintly family, he had every opportunity to reflect Daivī nature. However, instead of allowing wisdom to guide him, he allowed anger and pride to take control. Without understanding the full situation, he cursed a righteous king. His father, Samina , later lamented that the punishment was excessive, showing that spiritual qualification without humility can become dangerous. The contrast between these two personalities teaches a profound lesson. Asuri nature is not revealed by making a mistake; it is revealed by refusing to transform after the mistake. Daivi nature is not the absence of failure; it is the willingness to surrender, repent, and grow.
Therefore, the real journey from Asuri to Daivi begins when we stop feeding the ego and start feeding devotion. When we starve anger, pride, and selfishness, and nourish humility, saintly association, and surrender, our consciousness gradually reflects our eternal identity as servants of Krishna.
This is the transformation taught in Bhagavad Gita : our destiny is shaped not by the mistakes we make, but by the consciousness we choose to cultivate afterward.
